GS1 UK membership and GTIN allocation for textile DPP

How a UK textile brand gets set up on GS1 UK so its GTINs and GS1 Digital Link QR codes work for the DPP. Membership cost, GTIN prefix allocation, and integration with your product lifecycle.

By BrainBoxIT team, Filovera

Every regulated textile placed on the EU market from 2028 will need a GS1 Digital Link QR code, and every GS1 Digital Link URL needs a GTIN. That means every UK textile SMB heading toward ESPR compliance also needs to be set up on GS1 UK with a working GTIN allocation policy. This post covers what that looks like in practice.

What GS1 UK does

GS1 is the international organisation that maintains the GTIN, GLN, SSCC, and other supply-chain identifier standards. GS1 UK is the UK member organisation. Membership gives you a company prefix, from which you allocate GTINs to your own products. Without a company prefix, any GTIN you invent will collide with someone else's real GTIN.

The GS1 Digital Link standard maintained by GS1 is what encodes those GTINs into web-resolvable URLs so a QR code can point at a Digital Product Passport.

Membership cost

GS1 UK fees are tiered by annual turnover:

  • Under £500k turnover: around £119 per year (starter tier)
  • £500k to £1m: higher tier
  • £1m to £5m and above: higher tiers

Specific fees change year to year; check the current GS1 UK fee schedule. For an SMB textile brand, membership is one of the smaller line items in the DPP budget, well under 1% of the platform and supplier data spend.

What a company prefix looks like

A GS1 UK company prefix looks like 50123456 (7 to 10 digits). Your GTINs are built by appending an item reference and a check digit, giving a 13-digit GTIN like 5012345600017. The prefix belongs exclusively to your company for as long as membership is maintained.

If you have very high SKU counts (thousands to millions), GS1 UK issues shorter prefixes so more digits are available for item references. Most SMBs need only a standard-length prefix.

GTIN allocation policy

The single most important operational decision: allocate GTINs at the design stage, not at the shipping stage. If you wait until a product is ready to ship, you end up with SKUs that lack GTINs during a critical planning window when retailers and DPP platforms both need the identifier.

Recommended policy for an SMB textile brand:

  • Every new variant (unique combination of style, colour, size) gets a GTIN at design freeze
  • GTINs are recorded in the ERP or PIM as the canonical identifier
  • No SKU ships without a GTIN in the record

The relationship with GS1 Digital Link

A GS1 Digital Link URL for a GTIN looks like https://id.yourbrand.co.uk/01/5012345600017. The 01 is the GS1 Application Identifier for GTIN. Optional batch and serial identifiers can be appended: 01/5012345600017/10/BATCH42/21/SERIAL0001.

Your resolver (the server responding to that URL) returns the Digital Product Passport for that specific product, batch, or unit. Filovera generates both the QR code and the resolver behaviour automatically once GTINs are in place.

Common mistakes

Four traps to avoid:

  • Buying "resale GTINs" from third-party sellers. These are not properly allocated and get rejected by retailers and the EU registry. Only GTINs from official GS1 organisations work.
  • Reusing a GTIN when a product changes materially. If fibre composition, country of origin, or size specification changes, the product is a new SKU and needs a new GTIN. Reusing GTINs breaks traceability.
  • Allocating GTINs without a company prefix. Any "GTIN" that does not start with your allocated prefix is not yours, even if it is unused globally.
  • Storing GTINs as text without validation. GTIN 13-digit numbers have a check digit; store and validate them as GTINs, not as free-text strings, or you will ship codes with typos.

Where Filovera fits

Filovera consumes your GTINs from your ERP or PIM and generates the GS1 Digital Link QR code plus the resolved passport for each one. The QR codes are ready to hand off to your care label printer at the print size you specify. If you have not yet set up GS1 UK membership, we can point you at the GS1 UK contact who handles new SMB onboarding.

GTINs travel: the same identifier works in every market covered by the country-by-country DPP guide.
